Adoption of smart cities strategies in the United Kingdom: An empirical study
Abstract
Rapid urbanisation growth is causing a variety of technical and infrastructure-oriented challenges to cities around the world. Therefore, cities urgently need innovative organisational and institutional arrangements to enhance cities performance, liveability and sustainability. Many leaders choose to transform cities into “smart cities.” The aim of this paper is to explore the importance of key smart cities strategies deployed by various SMEs and large organisations in the UK. A web-based questionnaire survey method was employed to collect data. Statistical analyses were undertaken using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The survey revealed that strategies focus on environmental sustainability, such as smart energy, smart infrastructure, smart waste management, smart mobility, and smart water are the most important smart cities strategies. Whereas strategies such as smart financing, smart surveillance, smart manufacturing, and smart governance are less important. The paper concludes that it is necessary to cities to recognise the important smart cities strategies that reflect and respond to citizens’ needs and interests.Citation

Evaluation of the role of artificial intelligence in delivering smart citiesGriffiths, Kelly; Renukappa, Suresh; Suresh, Subashini; Mora, Luca (British Academy of Management, 2022-09-02)Smart Cities are having to find new techniques to deal with the increasing urbanisation situation in already overpopulated areas. A potential and developing solution is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enable these cities to tackle and overcome problems caused as a result of urbanisation. The objective of this review is to identify the breakdown of the different components of a smart city and understand published literature to identify and compile the impact artificial intelligence has on these 6 smart city attributes: smart economy, smart people, smart governance, smart mobility, smart environment and smart living. Artificial intelligence can have a number of potential positive impacts on Smart City evolvement and growth such as, education, public services, reduced travel times, intelligence and surveillance, increase energy efficiency and healthcare to name a few. It could however lead to a number of negative effects in unemployment, liability factor, trust, limited legislations, lack of emotive state and ethics and data breaches. Ultimately, the general public’s uncertainty, concern and general lack of understanding of the potential impacts of AI are obstructing its full use and potential, most of this stems from the lack of information given to the public regarding the future uses and potential AI brings. Further research needs to be carried out to fully understand the public’s concern to allow an action plan to be produced to ensure the public are on board with the implementation of AI. Without the public’s acceptance AI will not flourish and smart cities will not be able to cope with the increase of urbanisation.

Issues and challenges of smart cities governance: a systematic reviewKeshvardoost, Sina; Renukappa, Suresh; Suresh, Subashini; Al-Janabi, Razan (CIB, 2019-06-17)Smart governance is a key factor when considering the successful implementation of smart cities strategies. Smart cities create an extensive variety of issues and challenges that often poorly organised to deal with by their respective governments as they grow in size and complexity. Therefore, developed countries are creating their infrastructure on the basis of smart governance and sustainable development to improve the quality of life for more than a decade now. This paper explores through a systematic review of the key challenges and issues that governance of smart cities is facing on this network performance by focusing on the governance models, with a particular interest on how these can contribute to successful smart city network governance. However, the government departments seem not to engage the public in every activity they do. Sometimes due to security and political reasons they try to maintain a distance from the public; this shows the issues within the existing smart cities governance model. This paper concludes that although there are considerable smart city dossiers in literature, their governance model and structural variations development across regions is lacking.

Innovative business models for smart cities – A systematic reviewSuresh, Subashini; Renukappa, Suresh; Shetty, Nisha (Blue Eyes Intelligence Engineering & Sciences Publication, 2019-11-21)Cities are the engines of growth for a nation. Smart technologies can help address the urban challenges and improve quality of life, economic opportunity, and liveability for citizens. Cities benefit from a transparent overview of best practice solutions to become smarter and from identifying best-suited solution providers. Companies that make cities smarter benefit from becoming more visible to cities around the globe with their newly developed or proven solutions. Innovative business models help accelerate the adoption of smart technologies. Various funding mechanisms have been used by cities to develop smart city projects. However, it has been revealed that the literature does not provide enough thoughts on these concepts. This paper provides an insight to the concept of innovative business models and the adoption of these in smart cities. Further the paper advances the understanding on the evolving business models and city procurement policies that could be used to accelerate smart city development. The paper seeks to address the question: What are the challenges faced by organisations and smart cities to develop a successful innovative business model? Cities have designed well defined strategies and are in the process of developing strategies for smart city. The paper address the challenges and functions of an innovative business model for development of smart cities
